Kurashiki Tenryo Summer Festival

Kurashiki Chuo-dori Avenue (from Kurashiki Station to the City Art Museum)

Walk from the house straight into the festival. Thundering taiko drums, masked "Suinkyo" figures wandering the crowd, and thousands of dancers filling the avenue. Browse the night stalls, then stroll home while the excitement is still warm — a pleasure reserved for those staying in town.

Summer Illumination "Genso Teien" (Korakuen Garden)

Okayama Korakuen Garden · Okayama Castle is lit up during the same period

One of Japan's three great gardens shows a different face after dark. Lantern-lit lawns and ponds, visitors strolling in yukata. Leave the house in the late afternoon and ride home to Kurashiki on the evening breeze — a perfect small journey into the summer night.

Set out in the morning for a peach orchard, and let the scent of fruit picked minutes ago wrap around you. In the afternoon, a peach parfait at a café in the Bikan Historical Quarter. A whole day that smells of peaches.

Okayama Korakuen Garden

With no buildings in the way, the full moon rises slowly over the ridgeline. Sit on lawns normally closed to visitors, with koto music drifting through the moonlight — the garden's quietest night of the year.

A Day on Naoshima and Teshima

Year-round (September and October bring the gentlest sea breezes for island walks)

By ferry from Uno Port (Tamano)

Take your morning slowly at the house, then head for Uno Port. The moment the sea wind hits the ferry deck, the journey has already begun. Art, ocean, island lunches — catch the evening boat back, and the night returns you to Kurashiki's stillness.

Chapter Four

Kurashiki's Autumn Festival

The most "Kurashiki" two days of the year

Achi Shrine Autumn Festival & Kurashiki Byobu Festival

Traditionally the third Sunday of October and the day before — 2026 dates will be added once officially announced

Achi Shrine, the Bikan Historical Quarter, Honmachi and Higashimachi

For the Byobu Festival, townhouses open their lattice doors and welcome passers-by with heirloom folding screens and fresh flowers. If a masked "Suinkyo" elder taps your head with a fan, that's Kurashiki's autumn greeting — it is said to bring good health. Portable shrines and a costumed procession wind through the white-walled streets for two days, with the house as your quiet base.

Timed for the peak of the autumn colors, the maple grove "Chishio-no-mori" glows at the heart of the illuminated garden. Autumn leaves by night are another thing entirely — a late-autumn evening walk, warming your hands as you go.

Okutsu Gorge and Okutsu Onsen

Walk the gorge as it turns crimson, then sink into the hot springs of Okutsu Onsen and breathe in the mountain air. An easy day trip from Kurashiki, or a gentle detour with an overnight stay.
